AXE

AXE

-         K. Satchidanandan (India)

Between the squirrel’s squeak

And a pigeon’s cooing,

The axe.

Between the parrot’s wings

And the millipede’s legs,

The axe.

Between the sparrow’s nest

And the budding bough,

The axe.

Between the rain in the heart

And the clouds in the sky,

The axe.

Between sowing and harvesting

Between the earth’s act and the Heaven’s promise,

Between the lover and the beloved,

The axe.

Between the tree and the axe,

Life.

(Translated from the Malayalam by the poet)
