like to go
to the end of things
like Flamingo, in the Everglades
after a hurricane
smashed through the hotel
all that was standing
was the dock
and the bait shop
I’d buy a cup
pf the worst burnt coffee
I’d ever tasted
and a piece of
additive-ridden crumb cake
in an old wrapper
and sit out
gazing at the brackish water
watching
what turned out
to not be a log
twisting in the current
but a crocodile
rare, shy, ancient
a toothy death
who may not
have known
what I was
but I did recognize
what it was
