LOOK WHAT YOU DID TO ME

LOOK WHAT YOU DID TO ME

-         Gopi Kottoor (India)

There are shadows of you here

Forever. What did you do

With all that light?

Why did you turn them all

Into night?

You could have told me

Of birds,

Why they fly away in the middle of it all

Of fruits that fall

So their ripening did not mean a thing.

You could have emptied all that in the pyre

Without awakening

A thing called desire

That had the colour of our eyes

Gazing at each other

Ah, the secret glow of that fire

That we now search in ember

Between pain

And never again

In the rain, in the rain

Writing our poems all night

By the window pane.
