A WAFER THIN GOD

A WAFER THIN GOD

-         Des Dillon (U.K.)

We are the old fat men at mass.
Having broken almost every vow,
first and last,
we shuffle to communion

like the old fat men of our past

our youth and childhood galloped past.

A wafer thin God melts on our tongues
as we walk the gauntlet of our sins.
And when we're kneeling,
judgement shifted,
we shiver off the sweat
of perpetual dread.
