JERICHO

-         Miriam Sagan (U.S.A.)

Joshua Trees march towards the horizon
as if to encircle

a walled city
that has already fallen

we looked for things we couldn’t find
and found things we weren’t looking for

the prehistoric turtle shell
is larger than a human child

a metal hoop compares the diameter of our star
to the model earth located in the camp ground

you imagine you can see
across the miles to the Salton Sea

but you can’t really
assemble that mirage

the sun stands still
the moon stands still

these waterless portents
at the edge of the desert
