BLOCKED TRAFFIC

BLOCKED TRAFFIC

-         Heather Sager (U.S.A.)

The turtle crossed the boulevard,

and the man who parked his car

watched it. The turtle

lumbered over the curb

but traffic obstruction

didn’t stop, I too parked

to send my son out—

make sure the turtle got home.

The turtle’s head stuck proudly out,

more than I’ve ever seen a turtle do.

His feet hurried.

The turtle crammed his noggin

into the neighbor’s fence,

happening to think that his head would fit,

but what about his body?

No, the turtle’s body didn’t fit

through the fence slats.

My son laughed and so did I.

Eventually the turtle

found his way

and we went home.
