LOOKING FOR A THEME FOR A POEM
-
Kamala
Wijeratne (Sri Lanka)
My
mind drifts around
Looking
for a theme
For a
poem
And
end in reflection
Shall
I write on
Simple
mundane things
My
home
My
family
My
garden
My
neighbourhood?
Or the
weather
The
rain that relentlessly fall.
Every
day
Causing
floods
Landslides
And
Numberless
deaths?
Or
something profound
Like
the war
Between
Russia and Ukraine
Between
Hamas and ISRAEL
Of
blood and torn flesh
Of
newly born and unborn
Mangled
and twisted in death?
None
of those
But
the daily war of life
Of
human hands gouging out life from the earth
Of
skinny women in street corners
At
midnight vending their wares
Of
children with their palms open foe the unwilling coin
I will
write about them.
