TO MY HEART

TO MY HEART

-         Mike Jenkins (U.K.)

-

Heart, what have I done to deserve this?

Is this punishment for being an atheist,

For those gone days of cheroots ,

For those vomit-ending binges?

Let’s face it , aside from caffeine,

I have tried to treat you well

With my mostly plant base

And nutritious breakfasts

With memories of Corfu.

Heart, you keep sending me messages -

The spasms like twitches inside,

The sharp left arm pain

Which wakes me early morning.

It’s like you’re insisting -

‘Now you’ve turned 70

I’m the one who decides,

You’re closer than you think -

And you think forever,

However you spin it.’
